The Childrens Therapy Centre

Chiropractic

The human body is an amazing living “mechanism” in which the neuromusculoskeletal system is central. Chiropractic is concerned mainly with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of any mechanical disorders relating to the musculoskeletal system, as well as the effects these disorders may have on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment.

Why Chiropractic for children?

Children are subjected to major challenges during development:

  1. Birth trauma or stress
  2. In the first year of life, a child develops from a lying infant to a crawling baby, to a walking toddler
  3. Slips and falls
  4. Poor posture (Desk work, iPad overuse)
  5. Sporting injuries

One adjustment in a child is worth 50 in an adult. It is important to correct asymmetry as soon as possible. During infancy, there are optimal times at which basic skills should be learned. If a skill is not acquired correctly or is acquired poorly, it can interfere with cognitive and motor development later on. Often, with children, pain is not an associated symptom.Spinal or cranial joints are not moving properly they are not able to send a clear communication to the brain via the nervous system. The nervous system relies on this constant flow of communication from the joints (called proprioception) and muscles to function and develop optimally. The spinal asymmetry created by these dysfunctions can often have long-reaching effects and manifest in different ways. How well their bodies function will ultimately define their bodies are built. Our goals as chiropractors are to maximize that potential.Treatment involves very gentle spinal/manipulative techniques tailored to the age of the baby to help relax stiff joints and stimulate the nervous and immune system.
